Waste reduction and recycling (level one)

  • Juanita High School maintained a 55 percent recycling rate.
  • Green Team students set up a “food, too good to waste” share table in the cafeteria for unopened, uneaten foods from the school lunch program.
  • The Green Team created a music video to educate peers about the importance of sorting trash, recyclable, and compostable materials.
  • In its cafeteria, the school started to collect compostable materials to be sent to a composting facility.
  • Student and parent volunteers monitored lunchroom trash and recycling stations.
  • To reduce the use of paper, teachers regularly used electronic SMART boards, document cameras, and the school district’s HAIKU website to present information to students electronically. Teachers also requested electronic versions of presentations and assignments.
