Alaskan Way Viaduct

Partnership Process

The State of Washington, King County, and the City of Seattle are working together to find a comprehensive solution for the central waterfront section of the Alaskan Way Viaduct by the end of 2008. Gov. Christine Gregoire, King County Executive Ron Sims, and Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels have directed their transportation departments to evaluate options with the public.

The three agencies, with input from the Stakeholder Advisory Committee, have developed eight scenarios for replacing the central waterfront section of the viaduct. These scenarios are being evaluated based on six guiding principles:

  • Improve public safety
  • Provide efficient movement of people and goods
  • Maintain or improve the economies of downtown Seattle, the port, the region, and the state
  • Enhance Seattle's waterfront as a place for people
  • Create solutions that are fiscally responsible
  • Foster environmentally sound approaches.

In late 2008, WSDOT, King County and the City of Seattle will make a recommendation based on this evaluation. It is likely that they will recommend a hybrid solution that uses the strongest elements of the different scenarios.

The agencies also are seeking input from the general public. People may comment at public meetings, or submit comments any time by sending e-mail to viaduct@wsdot.wa.gov; through the viaduct program Web site [external site]; by mail to Alaskan Way Viaduct and Seawall Replacement Program, 999 Third Ave., Suite 2424, Seattle, WA 98104; or through the hotline, 1-888-AWV-LINE. The comments will be given to the stakeholder committee each month for their review.

Moving Forward Projects

In addition to working on a solution for the central waterfront, the county is working with the state and the city on the “Moving Forward” projects. These will repair or replace about half of the viaduct in the north and south ends of the corridor.
