Governance
The Metropolitan King County Council created the King County Ferry District in 2007. The purpose of this independent special-purpose government is to ensure the continuation of passenger-only ferry service in the county. King County Council members serve as the Ferry District’s Board of Supervisors.
As the governing body, the board determines the annual budget and work plan, establishes policies, and provides oversight for the King County Water Taxi system.
The Ferry District currently funds and governs two King County Water Taxi routes: West Seattle/Downtown Seattle and Vashon Island/Downtown Seattle. The Ferry District contracts with the King County Marine Division to operate these routes.
