King County Retired Metro Vans Get Second Wind Helping South King County Youth

As part of King County’s annual Retired Van Donation Program, Councilmember Pete von Reichbauer secured two retired King County vanpool vans for Auburn Youth Resources (AYR).

The Metropolitan King County Council passed legislation transferring retired passenger vans to nonprofit organizations and local governments that meet the needs of low-income, elderly, disabled and young people in our community.

“The van donation program began fifteen year ago after I noticed a substantial number of King County vans were sitting idle,” said Pete von Reichbauer, King County Councilmember. “As King County continues to have to make difficult decisions concerning the budget, this program becomes even more important and remains a lifeline to support our regions hard working non-profit organizations.”

One of the vans will support AYR’s Outreach Department and will be used to drive around south King County gathering youth who are homeless or runaway and the second van will go to the Serverson House for daily transportation of youth to appointments.

“As the challenging economic times continue, the demand for our services increases,” said Jim Blanchard, Executive Director of AYR. “The donation of these two vans will help our organization’s programs tremendously.”
