Community open house June 29 to discuss Maury Island Marine Park ‘primitive’ campsite

A proposal to conduct a pilot project of a small primitive camping area at Maury Island Marine Park is the subject of a community open house on June 29, hosted by King County Parks and Vashon Watersports.

King County Parks and Vashon Watersports host a community open house on June 29 to share a proposal from the watercraft rental company to establish a small number of primitive camping sites at Maury Island Marine Park.

The open house is scheduled for Wednesday, June 29 from 7-8 p.m. in the multipurpose room of McMurray Middle School, 9329 SW Cemetery Rd., Vashon.

Vashon Watersports’ proposal is for a pilot project featuring six campsites near the beach at Maury Island Marine Park. Fires would be prohibited, no vehicular access would be allowed, and although land access is possible via a ¾-mile-long trail, the primary access to the campsite would be by water.

The 320-acre Maury Island Marine Park features three miles of hiking trails, as well as more than one mile of undeveloped Puget Sound shoreline. The park offers excellent views of Mount Rainier, Puget Sound and the surrounding environment, including large stands of rare Pacific madrone.
