Get started on a beautiful, healthy yard before the spring is upon us! Get ready for spring planting and summer sun at Brightwater Center with three free workshops on natural yard care and wise water use.

Story

Garden planning season is starting at Brightwater Center to help people get ready for late winter planting and landscape projects.

King County is partnering with the Snohomish Conservation District to offer a series of three classes to help people create a healthy, sustainable landscape. These classes will be hands-on workshops for folks who are new to the concepts of natural yard care practices. Classes are free to attend, and there will be giveaways for attendees. Join us for one, two, or all three classes at the Brightwater Center.

Jumpstart Your Yard
Saturday, Jan. 14
10 a.m. – noon
Brightwater Center

Design and plant your yard to work for you! This introductory class will focus on effective yard design and how to choose the best plants for your landscape. Bring in photos or a map of your yard to get specific advice from the experts. All participants will receive free compost samples, plant starts, and discount coupons for the Snohomish Conservation District plant sale!

The Foundation of Your Yard
Saturday, Feb. 4
10 a.m. – noon
Brightwater Center

Join a King County soil scientist for a hands-on demonstration to learn what soil is made of and how to make it work better for your landscape. Have your soil tested prior to the class, or bring a soil sample with you to have it sent for analysis. All participants will receive free compost samples and discount coupons for the Snohomish Conservation District plant sale!

Watering Wisely
Saturday, Feb. 25
10 a.m. – noon
Brightwater Center

Watering your landscape effectively can save you valuable time and money! You will have healthy plants and avoid paying for water that runs into the storm drain. Yard care specialists will provide advice for getting the most out of every drop. You’ll learn about constructing rain gardens and installing rainwater catchment systems. To get you started, the Snohomish Conservation District will be selling rain barrels for $50.
