Get rid of household hazardous waste safely and easily this fall with final Wastemobile stops or year-round drop-off locations

Summary

People who live in Redmond, Renton, and Bothell can safely dispose of fluorescent light bulbs, batteries, oil-based paint, and many other household hazardous products at this year’s final three upcoming Wastemobile events in October. After that, four permanent locations will provide year-round disposal options.

Story

Batteries that wastemobile can take

The Hazardous Waste Management Program’s (Haz Waste Program) traveling Wastemobile will make three final stops this October, offering easy and convenient hazardous waste disposal for people living in King County. Safely disposing of hazardous materials helps protect the environment and public health and keeps toxic chemicals out of drains and landfills.

Oil-based paint, fluorescent light bulbs, batteries, and other household hazardous products are all accepted at the Wastemobile. The service is pre-paid through garbage and sewer utility fees, so there is no additional fee to drop off materials.

Visiting the Wastemobile to dispose of unwanted household hazardous waste is easy – just follow these steps:

 - Identify hazardous waste by looking at the product label. If you see the signal words CAUTION, WARNING, DANGER, or POISON, then you likely have hazardous waste.

 - Visit the Haz Waste Program’s hazardous products webpage to see a list of accepted items and the limits to how much you can drop off.

 - Never mix or combine products. Keep products in their original containers whenever possible.

 - Pack your items so they do not tip or leak during transport. Do not place items on passenger seats.

 - Stay in your vehicle while at the Wastemobile. On-site staff will greet customers.

Visit a Wastemobile event this October to dispose of hazardous materials properly to protect people, wildlife, and water quality:

- Oct. 7-9: Redmond Wastemobile at Home Depot (17777 NE 76th St., Redmond)
- Oct. 14-16: Renton Wastemobile at McLendon Hardware (440 Rainer Ave. S., Renton)
- Oct. 21-23: Bothell/Woodinville Wastemobile at UW Bothell Campus (18115 Campus Way NE, Bothell)

Created in 1989, the Wastemobile visits rural, suburban, and urban areas in King County to provide more convenient options for safe disposal of hazardous waste.

If you can’t make it to one of these Wastemobile disposal events, you can also visit the year-round facilities in Auburn, Factoria, South Seattle, and North Seattle. Visit the Haz Waste Program website to see specific locations or call 206-296-4692.

In 2021, the Haz Waste Program kept 3.3 million pounds of hazardous waste out of the solid waste system and the environment, and more than 70,000 King County residents safely dropped off their hazardous waste at a collection site.

So far in 2022, more than 21,000 residents and 200 businesses have used the Haz Waste Program to safely dispose of more than 518 tons of hazardous waste.
