Summary

King County Elections today mailed ballots for the April 25 special election in the Vashon Island School District.

Story

King County Elections today mailed ballots to 8,800 registered voters for the April 25 special election in the Vashon Island School District. The department estimates a 46 percent voter turnout rate.

King County Elections is testing pre-paid postage for this election after a successful pilot in Maple Valley and Shoreline. Vashon Island voters will receive ballot packets that include a return envelope with the postage already paid.

“We’re continuing to examine pre-paid postage as another tool to improve voter access,” said Julie Wise, King County Elections Director. “Our goal is always to provide voters with options to make voting as convenient as possible.”

Ballot packets include an informational insert explaining that the postage on a voter’s return envelope is paid and that they can immediately return their ballot through the U.S. Postal Service. Ballots can also be brought to the drop box at the Vashon Library, the King County Administration Building in Seattle or the King County Elections building in Renton.

King County Elections is paying for the postage, which will cost about $2,500. The department is charged only for ballots returned through the U.S. Postal Service.

The Vashon Island School District will vote on a general obligation bond to upgrade facilities at the island’s three schools.
