Because of its location within the Pacific Ring of Fire, King County is particularly vulnerable to earthquakes.

A number of faults criss-cross our region, including the Seattle Fault directly underneath us, and the Cascadia Subduction Zone to our west in the Pacific Ocean.

To help everyone get prepared for when the earth moves, King County encourages you to participate in the 2017 Great Washington ShakeOut. At 10:19 a.m. on October 19, practice what you would do in a real quake: DROP, COVER, and HOLD ON until the shaking stops.
