Special Use Permits

Special Use Permits

There are several different types of permits for use of King County property that can be granted by Real Estate Services. If you're not sure what type you need, please contact us at RES.Permits@kingcounty.gov or 206-477-9350.

A general Special Use Permit (SUP) is a permit for the use of King County property in which the County has an ownership interest. Submit your SUP request by completing an application form.

There may be fees required for processing, administration, land use, inspection, and plan review associated with your SUP request. In addition, there may be a requirement to add King County as an additional insured on your insurance policy and/or bonding requirements to reduce King County exposure to liability and damage.

Your SUP application should include the following information:

  • Applicant's name, address, phone number, and email
  • How you propose to use County property
  • Plans showing the location of the proposed use
  • The proposed method of installation and construction
  • Define, if required, the proposed method of operation and maintenance
  • Define all the required permits necessary to perform the work or installation
  • Proposed duration of the use

Please email your application to RES.Permits@kingcounty.gov. If you have questions about the application process, please call us at 206-477-9350.

Gatherings such as block parties, festivals, parades, and other types of events require an Event Special Use Permit (SUP). Apply for an Event SUP by completing an application form.

Your application must include the following information:

  • Applicant's name, address, and phone number
  • Purpose of the proposed event
  • Date, starting and ending time of the event
  • Estimate number of participants
  • One copy of a map showing the location of the proposed use
  • Detailed route by route (if applicable)
  • Certificate of insurance naming King County as an additional insured

Submit your request for an Event SUP at least sixty (60) days prior to the event.

Please email your request to RES.Permits@kingcounty.gov. If you have questions, please call us at 206-477-9350.

Certain businesses may be allowed to use portions of the County road right-of-way abutting their premises for outdoor business operations while King County Executive Order ACO-8-25-EO is in effect. A Special Use Permit is required for these uses. Complete applications must include:

  • a drawing or sketch of how the right-of-way will be used
  • proof of insurance naming King County as an additional insured party
  • the digitally signed application form.

There are no fees for this type of permit.
