In July of 2020, Public Health – Seattle & King County received $4.83 million through CARES Act funding to support food security efforts in King County. This funding is intended to support Black and Indigenous communities, Communities of Color, low-income communities, Immigrant and Refugee Communities, and communities that have been unable to access other forms of government aid due to structural or institutional barriers, including fear of deportation or those experiencing gender-based violence in King County (outside of Seattle). These communities have been disproportionately impacted by COVID-19 and are experiencing food insecurity at higher rates. Public Health – Seattle & King County created a one-time grant opportunity for community-based and grassroots organizations/coalitions to apply for funding to support the work of feeding their communities; work that they have been doing since the beginning of this pandemic.

Of the $4.83 million, funding will be allocated in the following ways:

  • $2,150,000 will go towards purchasing and distributing Safeway food vouchers in partnership with the organizations awarded. Vouchers will be distributed to people who screen for food insecurity.
  • $2,600,000 will be awarded to organizations so that they can purchase culturally appropriate foods from ethnic markets and local farms as well operational costs to distributed food such as staff time, supplies, and equipment.
  • $80,000 will cover Public Health - Seattle & King County grant administration costs

Public Health – Seattle & King County received 115 applications that totaled $20 million of need. Clearly this pandemic has multiplied the effect of food insecurity within low-income, Communities of Color. Although this funding is short-term, the food provided as a result will make a difference in the lives of many families and individuals.

Each application was reviewed thoroughly. The raters prioritized organizations that focused on the intended recipients listed above and organizations/coalitions that have built trust with the communities they serve. Through the CARES Act Food Security Assistance Program, Public Health – Seattle & King County awarded 30 agencies across King County through the end of December. These organizations applied for a mixture of only distributing food vouchers, only distributing culturally appropriate foods, as well as some who will do both. Below you will find information about each organization that has been awarded. We are proud to be partnering with them!
