The Larry Gossett 2021 Service Award recognizes and affirms an individual or organization who have made significant contributions in the areas of racial equity, social justice, and/or human rights, the award is presented annually at the King County, Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration and selected by King County Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Planning Committee (PC) and the King County African American Affinity Group (AG).

Criteria

  1. The nominee has been either personally or part of a community-based organization involved in making tangible, visible, and meaningful contributions to the advancement of equity and social justice, and/or human rights.
  2. The nominee must have been a King County resident or have worked in King County for at least one year and instrumental in a business, labor union, or advocacy group as described above for at least one year.

Nomination Process

  1. Anyone can make a nomination.
  2. The Deadline for submitting nominations is January 1, 2021.
  3. Nomination must be submitted using the nomination form link below.

Selection Process

  1. The PC and AG reviews all nominations and recommends finalists for the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration for consideration and final selection. Any member who is nominated for the award must excuse themselves from discussions and voting during the selection process. Likewise, any immediate family members must also excuse themselves from the decision-making process.
  2. The PC shall notify the winner in January and invite the winner to attend the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration.
  3. The Metropolitan King County Council Chair and/or the King County Executive will present the award at the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration.

Purpose of the Award

Selection Process

The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Planning Committee in collaboration with King County Legislative and Executive Branch’s African American Affinity Groups will determine the winner. Any member or family member of the Committee who is nominated cannot participate in the discussion or voting to select the award recipient.

Presentation of the Award

The award recipient will be notified in January and invited to attend the King County Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration. The Metropolitan King County Council Chair or the King County Executive will present the award at the Celebration.
