Dunn awards $150k WaterWorks grant to restore, protect Jenkins Creek in Maple Valley

November 29, 2023

King County Councilmember Reagan Dunn on Tuesday awarded a $150,000 WaterWorks grant to the City of Maple Valley for the stormwater treatment and restoration along Jenkins Creek and Lake Wilderness Country Club Drive.

“This funding will be put to work to improve water quality and habitat in Maple Valley,” Dunn said. “I am proud to deliver this funding to support the City of Maple Valley’s critical work. This project will not only benefit Jenkins Creek but will have downstream impacts that improve the overall ecosystem.”

The Jenkins Creek project has two goals. First, the project will restore 300 feet of stream habitat adjacent to the Jenkins and Soos Creeks by planting native flora to help maintain the area and reduce the roadway runoff that gets into the creeks. Second, the project will address sediment and chemical levels in the water due to roadway runoff that has been impacting local salmon populations.

“The City of Maple Valley appreciates the continued support from Councilmember Reagan Dunn and the King County Council in our pursuit to improve water quality in Jenkins Creek,” said Maple Valley Mayor Sean P. Kelly. “We are excited about the impact that enhanced treatment and restoration projects, like this, can have on salmon habitat both within our city boundaries and for our downstream neighbors.”

The WaterWorks Grant Program provides approximately $5 million in funding every two years to organizations carrying out a variety of water quality improvement projects in the service area for King County’s regional wastewater system.
