$12 million approved for fish recovery, conservation, and education in King County

Sept. 12, 2023

The King County Flood Control District on Tuesday approved over $12 million to fund salmon conservation, education, and passage projects in four Water Resource Inventory Areas (WRIAs). Of that total, roughly $4 million will go to projects in King County Council District 3 – specifically funding WRIA 7 and a portion of WRIA 8 – where Supervisor and King County Councilmember Sarah Perry advocated for the funding.

“I am honored to have joined my Flood Control District colleagues in supporting habitat protection and conservation for our salmon along with making investments in education and advocacy opportunities to engage our younger generation,” Perry said. “I’m excited about the opportunities that this funding will provide toward reaching our conservation goals here in District 3 and throughout King County, and I look forward to continuing to support initiatives that ensure that our fish populations are protected and growing.”

These Cooperative Watershed Management Grants will fund a variety of projects, including fish passage design and construction, waterway and habitat restoration, and control of invasive species and replanting.
