King County provides $400,000 to City of Normandy Park for Miller Creek Improvements

On Tuesday, the King County Council approved a Parks Capital and Open Space Grant of $400,000 to the city of Normandy Park for improvements at Miller Creek. The city will use the funds toward property acquisition of a 0.76-acre parcel on Miller Creek to create an open space pocket park, restore habitat, and provide education opportunities and public access for viewing salmon in the watershed. 

“Improving everyone’s access to parks and investing in the restoration of salmon habitat go hand in hand,” said King County Councilmember Dave Upthegrove. “This project will have the added benefit of providing educational opportunities for community members to learn about our iconic salmon and the role a healthy environment plays in their survival.” 

“The City of Normandy Park is so excited to be named as a recipient of this meaningful grant funding. With this support, we can create an enjoyable pocket park that both educates and improves the environmental habitat for salmon. Something for everyone,” said Amy Arrington, City Manager

The Parks Capital and Open Space Grants program is part of the voter-approved 2020-2025 Parks Levy and seeks to assist eligible entities with open space acquisition, active recreation, passive recreation, and local trails.   In August 2019, King County residents overwhelmingly supported the ballot a proposition authorizing a six-year property tax levy estimated to raise $810 million to support parks and open space throughout the County.
