Balducci issues statement on homelessness authority stabilization plan

King County Councilmember Claudia Balducci issued the following statement Wednesday after County Executive Girmay Zahilay and Seattle Mayor Katie B. Wilson announced next steps in stabilization for the King County Regional Homelessness Authority:

“I am glad to see King County and the City of Seattle come together and agree on a new path forward for the King County Regional Homelessness Authority. I’m very interested in hearing more about the replacement approach and look forward to the King County Council being a partner in creating it.

“It remains critically important that we take a regional approach to this regional problem, and I strongly encourage King County and Seattle leaders to include the 38 other cities of King County, along with our nonprofit and community partners, as we plan for the future path forward on homelessness.

“I appreciate the thoughtful pace being proposed, especially given that the deadline for announcing the managing entity for federal Continuum of Care funds has passed and considering how we manage federal funds will be a crucial part of crafting a new approach. But we must push forward with urgency and we must focus on achieving better outcomes for our region, for both people in homelessness and the broader community. That will require us to commit ourselves to moving forward with practices that are informed by both the data showing what works and our values of care and compassion for our most vulnerable neighbors.

“Today is an important first step and I am ready and willing to partner with the community and my fellow elected officials to put together a plan that provides people in homelessness a path towards safe, stable housing and brings our entire region together to address our regional homelessness crisis.”
