Constantine applauds state call for a halt to mining operations at Maury Island aquatic reserve

Council chair urges rescission of state shorelands lease for massive barge-loading facility
Story
Metropolitan King County Council Chair Dow Constantine praised today’s request by State Commissioner of Public Lands Peter Goldmark that operations be halted at the proposed Maury Island gravel mine until Northwest Aggregates – formerly known as Glacier Northwest – provides detailed information on its mitigation plan for the sensitive shoreline site. However, Constantine encouraged the state to take further action to block the mining project, including rescinding the lease for state shorelands that was issued to Northwest Aggregates by former Lands Commissioner Doug Sutherland late last year. Goldmark defeated Sutherland in the November election.
“I thank Commissioner Goldmark for addressing this important issue. Many environmental questions clearly remain over this proposal to operate a massive mining and barge facility in a state-designed aquatic reserve,” said Constantine, whose Council district includes Vashon and Maury Islands. “Ensuring the future of the Maury Island aquatic reserve is an important part of our efforts to protect and restore Puget Sound.”
“If we are serious about saving Puget Sound, we cannot allow industrial operations in a critical shoreline environment,” said State Rep. Sharon Nelson (D-Maury Island). “Commissioner Goldmark is to be commended for reviewing this lease, which was issued by former Commissioner Sutherland after his defeat at the polls."
