Constantine: Return of voting rights a return of “voice” in community

Summary

Story

“I commend Governor Christine Gregoire for signing HB 1517 into law today. HB 1517, also known as the Voting Rights Restoration Bill, will restore the voting rights of Washington residents who have completed their sentences for felony crimes.

“Under HB 1517, the complex legal process to restore voting rights has been eliminated and restoration will no longer be contingent on the payment of fines or assessments. Voting is a fundamental civil right that cannot be denied based on financial status.

“Our goal is to reintegrate former prisoners back into society by bringing them into the workforce and enabling them to become productive members of our community. Voting gives citizens a voice in their community and a stake in its future.”
