Story
The King County Council approved funding for local WaterWorks grants Tuesday. Included in these grants is $80,000 for Landcastle water quality improvements, awarded by Councilmember Reagan Dunn from King County Council District 9 allocations of WaterWorks Grants.“By ensuring that the necessary funds are directed towards the Landcastle water quality improvements, we are making sure that surrounding communities are better protected from the risk of flooding,” said Dunn. “I am extremely proud to work for investments such as this that improve the safety of our communities and keep our neighborhoods beautiful.”
The S-040 Landcastle Water Quality Improvement Project will work to address the erosion that has been observed along an unnamed drainage tributary that connects piped drainage networks between 111th Pl SE and 116th Ave SE in Newcastle. This project will work to install bypasses for two stormwater outfalls west of 116th Ave SE, working to reduce downstream erosion, sedimentation, and flooding. The application and approval of the grant comes after the City of Newcastle completed an Alternatives Analysis in early 2021. The beginning of this project is planned for 2022.
“We’re thrilled that the County WaterWorks Grant will fund the City of Newcastle’s Landcastle Water Quality Improvement Project, which will directly reduce downstream erosion, sedimentation, and flooding around our waterways,” said Newcastle Mayor Linda Newing. “Not only will this grant fund stormwater infrastructure, but it allows for an education and outreach element that will ensure the longevity of the project’s success, resulting in improved water quality for the City of Newcastle and for Lake Washington.”
