IMG_2217Joined by the King County Sheriff and human service providers from throughout King County, the members of our Budget Leadership Team went to the Orion Center Nov. 12 to announce the completion of the 2014 King County Budget.

It’s a budget that enhances services like the Orion Center, a program that provides shelter and critical services to homeless youth, and protects housing throughout the County. It also maintains the County’s focus on equity and social justice while preserving King County’s AAA bond rating.

Budget "Strikers" presented to Budget Committee

The County Council Budget Committee—which is all nine members of the Council during the review and deliberations on the County Budget—today received the Budget Leadership Team’s (BLT) Budget “Striker.” The striker, created by Budget Chair Joe McDermott and Councilmembers Kathy Lambert, Jane Hague and Larry Phillips, is the BLT’s recommended changes to the Executive Proposed Budget.

For 2014, there are two budget strikers. The first striker is for King County’s last annual budget. The second striker is for the County’s biennial budget.

The Budget Committee will review both documents and prepare to send the strikers to the full County Council for a final vote, which is scheduled to occur on Tuesday, November 12.

Kent-budget-composite-smDiscussing budget priorities at the Maleng Regional Justice Center

Thirty residents from throughout south King County joined the members of the Council’s Budget and Fiscal Management Committee in Kent October 8 to testify about what they believe should be in the County’s 2014 Budget.

Their comments ranged from supporting survivors of Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault to staffing at the County’s correctional facilities to continued funding for Youth Source, a program that assist young people who have become part of the criminal justice system. You can view a rebroadcast of the meeting on King County TV.

We are now at the halfway point of our four special night meetings on the 2014 Executive Proposed Budget. The next meeting will be in North Bend on Wednesday, October 16.

The Council received Executive Dow Constantine's proposed 2014 Budget on Monday, Sept. 23. The Executive’s budget address is the start of an intensive eight-week process of Council review and deliberation.

The budget is a complex policy document that sets priorities, shapes service delivery, and impacts all areas of County government. The Council is responsible for making all final decisions on the budget. For the 2014 Budget, the Council’s deliberations will focus on long-term policy issues given the transition to biennial budgets. Traditionally, the vote on the spending plan takes place in November before Thanksgiving
