Perry brings proposal to protect against explosions, environmental risks of battery energy storage systems
"This ordinance builds on our recent work on financial responsibility around fossil fuel facilities by ensuring Battery Energy Storage Sites (BESS) also address potential public safety and environmental protection concerns. As renewable energy sources, such as battery storage sites, become increasingly common, we have the same responsibility to ensure the safety of our residents and the protection of our soil, water tables and surrounding areas, as we do with our current fossil fuel facilities. We will continue to ensure these protections as we strive to meet King County's Strategic Climate Action Plan goals."

“Today we took important action strengthening environmental protections in the case of a spill, explosion or decommissioning of a fossil fuel facility in unincorporated King County. Recognizing the potential risk both fossil fuel and non-hydroelectric generation facilities can pose to community health and the natural environment, I am proud to offer this legislation that helps protect public health and safety, air and water quality, habitats, and natural resource lands.”

The persistent economic and social challenges brought by COVID-19 must be addressed in this budget to effectively regain and maintain our economic and social stability, including focus on environmental protection and preservation, sustainable and accessible transit, public safety, behavioral health, and services and programs for those with the least historic investment such as our BIPOC communities and rural areas. Fall City aims to preserve ‘rural character’ amid unprecedented housing growth
“There’s absolutely an opportunity to guide development in unincorporated areas better,” said King County Councilmember Sarah Perry, who represents northeast King County and Fall City on the council and chairs the Local Service and Land Use Committee. “I’m wanting to protect that rural character.
