Clary sage identification and control: Salvia sclarea

Clary sage identification and control

Salvia sclarea

clary sage plant

This Class A Noxious Weed is found in limited distribution in Stevens County, where it is invasive and difficult to control in open range lands or pastures. Eradication of clary sage is required in King County. In Western Washington, clary sage is sometimes sold as a garden ornamental. However, it is on the state quarantine list, and is illegal to buy, sell or offer this plant for sale in Washington. For more information on noxious weed regulations and definitions, see Noxious weed lists and laws.

Clary sage can be distinguished by the large, colorful bracts found beneath each flower. However, sage species are difficult to distinguish so it is best to get an expert identification before removing.
