Leave donation programs updated for 2023
Two new leave donation programs began Jan. 1, 2023, that comply with IRS requirements and make permanent the emergency leave fund started during the pandemic.
The Emergency Medical Leave Fund allows leave-eligible employees to donate accrued leave and request donations from a central fund. Through the Employee-to-Employee Medical Leave Donation Program, you can donate your accrued leave directly to another comprehensive leave-eligible employee.
Under the new programs, donated leave can be used only for reasons specified under the Family and Medical Leave Act, such as a serious health condition or to bond with a new child. Donated time can only be used after you have exhausted your own leave balances, and must be used first for an absence of three or more consecutive days, then can be used intermittently.
For more information, including an FAQ, go the Donated Leave tab on the Taking leave webpage.
