What is vanpool? ¿Qué es vanpool?

Cut your commute costs, breeze by traffic in the carpool lane, reduce drive-alone stress and help keep our air cleaner by joining a Metro Vanpool.

Join an existing group or start your own—three members* gets you on the road! Everything is covered. Your monthly fare includes the van, gas, insurance, maintenance, roadside assistance, plus a guaranteed ride home.

*Metro has temporarily reduced the minimum ridership from five to three people.

  • Commuters
    Five or more people who share a similar commute; could be co-workers, friends, or neighbors.
  • Roles & fares
    Each group has at least two volunteer drivers plus a bookkeeper to track mileage. ridership and fares. Fares are based on mileage, number of riders and size of van. On average, the monthly vanpool cost is similar to a monthly transit pass.
  • Logistics
    Vans are kept at a driver's house and riders usually meet at a Park & Ride. Each group determines their own route, parking and operating rules.
  • Vanpool has all you’ll need
    Gas, insurance, maintenance, 24-hour roadside assistance and a guaranteed ride home are all included. Many employers even subsidize vanpool fares—ask your office manager or HR department.

Steps to get started

  1. Recruit at least two other people to help fill the driver and bookkeeper role. Your group will need at least two drivers and one bookkeeper.
  2. Discuss and agree on group details such as parking, route, work schedule, etc.
  3. Submit your group information and application and we'll follow up with next steps.

Fare Schedules

How much are vanpool fares?

Many factors determine the monthly fare Vanpoolers pay, such as number of days commuting, mileage and the number of people in your van. Use this tool to calculate your approximate monthly cost. Check with your HR department, transportation team or Employee Transportation Coordinator (ETC) to see if your employer provides a transportation benefit towards vanpool.

Questions? If you have fare-related questions, or need assistance calculating your fares, please have your van's bookkeeper contact your assigned Accounting Rideshare Service Rep. For recruiting questions or other support, contact King County's Commuter Van Program via email.

Please note: Fares resumed Oct. 1, 2020. Groups who are parked and not commuting may not drive the van, are not allowed personal use, excess miles and/or driver bonus miles at any time. Any driving must be for commute purposes and is charged at the full monthly rate.

We appreciate your participation in our commuter van program! Please call us if you need assistance—our phones are staffed Monday-Friday, 8am-5pm. For emergencies after hours, weekends or holidays, your call will be patched into our answering service.
