Overview

The King County Road Services Division closed a portion of Green River Road and 94th Place South from 8 a.m. Monday, November 6, to noon on Friday, November 17, to implement the roadside clean up and no parking project. This was the first step in a two-phase plan to enhance safety in the surrounding area. During this initial phase, the county removed 100 tons of trash, litter and debris and secured the road right-of-way area, which includes the paved road surface and approximately 10 to 20 feet beyond. Barriers, fencing, and more than 100 “no parking” signs also were installed. We will return in mid-2024 to make more safety improvements in the vicinity of Green River Road.

Background

King County’s utmost priority is the safety of all individuals residing in and using this area – this includes permanent residents, unsheltered individuals, employees, and people traveling through or using local recreational or other facilities.

Overnight parking and camping along the road right-of-way in this area posed public safety hazard.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, overnight parking and camping were allowed to continue in the area due to pandemic-related public health concerns. With the pandemic now over, the area has been restored to its intended use and function.

King County provided access to an offsite temporary parking lot for people living in vehicles who were displaced by this project. Restrooms, handwashing stations, dumpster, and outreach services also were provided.

In summer 2023, the King County Executive proposed, and the King County Council authorized through a supplemental budget ordinance, a project to restore the area along Green River Road and 94th Place South.

Project location

  • Green River Road from 259th Street (near Kent city limits) to slightly south of the Green River Park (soccer field and P-Patch) parking lot.
  • 94th Place South from the intersection of Green River Road (aka the Triangle) to approximately one third of a mile to the south. The closed segment does not include any adjacent private residences.
