Lake stewardship

Protecting the lakes of King County, Washington

The Lake Stewardship Program monitors the water quality of small lakes in King County to assess the real and potential changes over time.

  • Small lake data and info. Search, view, and download water quality data resulting from volunteer monitoring efforts at more than 50 lakes in King County.

  • Hydrologic Information Center. The hydrologic Information Center provides public access to rainfall, streamflow and other hydrologic data collected at King County gage sites. For lakes with continuous data loggers installed, you can access lake level and water temperature data on the HIC.

  • Northwest Toxic Algae Monitoring Program. View current and past toxin data, report a bloom, and learn about toxic algae.

  • Lake Swimming Beach data. View current lake swimming beach closures due to high bacteria.

  • WDFW Fish Stocking. Where and how many trout WDFW plans to stock in lakes and streams around the state.

  • Lake Weed Watchers. King County volunteer monitoring program. Volunteer to monitor for aquatic weeds in your lake.

Infographic posters to download:

Lake Advocates worked with UW Bothell students to create infographic posters around lake health. Poster topics include: Love your Lake – Protect the shoreline, Toxic Algae Blooms. When in doubt, stay out!, Prevent the spread of aquatic noxious weeds, and The importance of lake management. These posters were translated into 6 languages: Amharic, Chinese, Korean, Russian, Spanish, and Ukrainian.

These posters are also part of a larger report, Water quality protection of King County lakes using outreach and education for diverse communities. This report, completed by Lake Advocates and UW Bothell and funded by a WaterWorks Grant documents findings of an environmental communications project done to raise awareness and broaden community engagement around lake issues and best management practices to protect water quality.
