Waste reduction and recycling (level one)
- Frank Love Elementary achieved a recycling rate of 77 percent.
- In fall 2013, the school received the King County Earth Challenge assembly to kick-off its waste reduction and recycling efforts.
- All fifth-grade students were trained in proper sorting of recyclables by a King County Green Schools Program representative.
- The student Green Team of 12 fifth-grade students ensured that every classroom had a recycling bin with proper signage placed on it and, when possible, was located next to a garbage container.
- Students assisted the custodial staff by collecting recyclable materials from classrooms and placing them in a central hallway recycling container.
- In spring 2014, the Green Team provided presentations to every classroom on what can and can’t be recycled and the benefits of recycling.
- To encourage and promote paper reuse, Green Team members created G.O.O.S. (Good on One Side) boxes for each classroom.
- Staff and families are updated on the school’s waste reduction and recycling actions through a bi-weekly newsletter.
- The school replaced plastic-wrapped utensils and straws with unwrapped plastic utensils and straws.
- The custodian established and monitored a kitchen recycling container for steel cans.
- The school participated in grass-cycling on its playground.
Energy conservation (level two)
- Green Team members created a display about actions students can take to conserve energy.
