Success stories

Individual K-12 schools, their student Green Teams, and school districts in King County outside the City of Seattle may participate in the King County Green Schools Program.

Student teams

Student team recognition celebrates student activities and projects in addition to or separately from school recognition. A student Green Team can be any size, or can be part of another student club or a class.

Schools

Schools in 17 school districts and 35 cities in King County have earned recognition as King County Green Schools. Over 151,000 students in participating schools have had opportunities to learn about and engage in waste reduction, recycling, and other conservation practices.

As of January 2021:

  • 278 schools have received recognition as Level One King County Green Schools
  • 167 schools have received recognition as Level Two King County Green Schools
  • 127 schools have received recognition as Level Three King County Green Schools
  • 79 schools have received recognition as Sustaining Green Schools in one or more years

Each school received a certificate of recognition, a "We are a King County Green School" banner – or a "Level Two" or "Level Three" sticker or "Sustaining Green School" ribbon to place on their banner – as well as a success story on this web page and mention in a press release issued by King County.

The schools are divided according to school district. Private schools are listed under "Private Schools." Select a school district or "private schools" and then read school success stories by clicking on the school names.

School districts

The following school districts have earned recognition as King County Green School Districts.
Six school districts (Auburn, Bellevue, Issaquah, Kent, Mercer Island and Tahoma) have been recognized as Level One Green School Districts. To meet Level One school district criteria, at least 75 percent of a district's schools must be recognized as Level One Green Schools.

Four school districts (Bellevue, Issaquah, Kent and Tahoma) have been recognized as Level Two Green School Districts, and three school districts (Bellevue, Kent and Tahoma) have been recognized as Level Three Green School Districts.

In addition, the following eight school districts participate in the program and are working toward completing Level One school district criteria.
