Dispose of household hazardous waste safely and easily across King County at the Wastemobile mobile collection service

Summary

It’s that time of year again when people living in King County can safely and conveniently dispose of fluorescent light bulbs, batteries, oil-based paint, and many other household hazardous products close to home at the King County Wastemobile. The mobile collection service travels to communities throughout the county from late February to October. The 2023 Wastemobile season kicks off today and continues this weekend at the University of Washington – Bothell campus.

Story

The King County Wastemobile is headed back out on the road for the 2023 season to make it easy for people to safely get rid of household hazardous waste closer to home. The first stop for the mobile hazardous waste collection service will occur today and continue Saturday and Sunday at the University of Washington – Bothell campus.

From late February to October, the Wastemobile travels to rural and suburban cities in King County. Residents and small businesses can safely drop off their household hazardous waste at no cost. This year, the Wastemobile will make 21 stops in 12 areas across the county including Federal Way, Vashon, and Snoqualmie.

The Wastemobile takes items such as batteries, fluorescent light bulbs, propane and butane tanks, automotive fluids and oils, pesticides, and much more. A full list of accepted items and quantity limits for residents and eligible businesses is online at kingcountyhazwastewa.gov.

Wastemobile visitors can also check out a reusable household products cart, where they can grab other donated automotive, cleaning, and home improvement products that are still in good condition. There is no cost to take items, but a release form is required.

Created in 1989, the Wastemobile was the nation’s first traveling hazardous waste collection program. It is operated by the Hazardous Waste Management Program and makes weekend trips throughout the county.

Over its 34 years in operation, the Wastemobile has collected more than 17,000 tons of hazardous household waste from nearly 500,000 visitors. Residents help protect the environment and public health by safely disposing of their hazardous materials and keeping them out of drains and landfills.

In addition to the Wastemobile, King County residents and eligible businesses can drop off hazardous waste year-round at disposal locations in North Seattle, South Seattle, Factoria, and Auburn. Hours of operation and addresses for those sites can be found at kingcountyhazwastewa.gov.
