High friction surface treatment
Select roads to receive anti-skid treatment in 2021 to increase traction
King County Roads Services will apply a High Friction Surface Treatment (HFST) to 16 sections of King County Roads between June and October 2021. The anti-skid treatment improves safety by increasing traction and reducing the run-off-the-road crashes. The product provides more rolling resistance and is most successful on sharp curves where drivers slide off the road and hit fences, other barriers, and end up in the grass or a ditch.
King County applied this innovative product in 2015 and 2018 with success. King County has analyzed and reviewed areas where it could continue to make a difference.
The map below shows the locations where we will apply the treatment in 2021.

Roads like these are good candidates for High Friction Surface Treatment. If a driver takes this corner too fast, s/he may slide and hit the trees or bounce off the guardrail. In this case, the anti-skid treatment creates greater traction leading up to and inside the curve, and the guardrail installation reduces the chance of hitting the trees which could cause greater physical harm.
