Where do my property tax dollars go?

We collect taxes for the state, the county, cities, and taxing districts like schools. Then we distribute the revenue back to them. Taxes also fund voter-approved measures for veterans, seniors, fire protection, and parks. For the most part these voter-approved measures, and not increasing property values, are responsible for increases in property taxes.

King County gets about 19% of your property taxes to fund services like roads, criminal justice, and public health.

2024 PROPERTY TAX HIGHLIGHTS

Overall taxes for the 2024 tax year are $7.6 billion, an increase of approx. $369 million or 5.1% from the previous year of $7.2 billion. Total County value decreased by approx. 5.3%, from $880 billion to $833 billion, as the housing market cooled from historic highs in 2021 and 2022.

Voter Approved Measures Passed in 2023 for the 2024 tax year:

  • King County: KC voters approved the following lid lifts.
    9-year temporary lid lift to fund a regional network of behavioral health crisis care centers.
    6-year temporary lid lift renewal for Vets/Human Services/Seniors.
    Qualifying Seniors/disabled taxpayers are exempt from both lid lifts.
  • Cities: Voters in the following cities approved the following property tax measures.
    City of Maple Valley: 1-year permanent lid lift for Public Safety. Qualifying Seniors/disabled taxpayers are exempt from this lid lift.
    City of Seattle: 7-year temporary lid lift for Low Income Housing. Qualifying Seniors/disabled taxpayers are exempt from this lid lift.
  • Fire Districts: Voters in the following fire districts approved various measures.
    FD 13 6-year permanent lid lift to $1.50/$1,000, 6% limit factor in years 2-6.
    FD 27 6-year permanent lid lift to $1.25/$1,000, CPI-U limit factor in years 2-6.
    FD 39 6-year permanent lid lift to $1.50/$1,000, 6% limit factor in years 2-6.
    FD 40 6-year permanent lid lift to $1.00/$1,000, greater of CPI-W or 1% limit factor in years 2-6.
    FD 43 6-year permanent lid lift to $1.50/$1,000, 6% limit factor in years 2-6.
    FD 49 6-year permanent levy lid lift to $1.00/$1,000, 6% limit factor in years 2-6.
    FD 63 6-year permanent levy lid lift to $1.00/$1,000, 6% limit factor in years 2-6.
  • Vashon Park & Rec: 4-year temporary lid lift renewal.
  • School Districts: The following School measures were passed in 2023.
    SD 404 4-year Technology Capital Projects Levy for technology improvements and equipment.
    SD 415 3-year Replacement levy for Expiring Educational Programs and Operations Levy.
