Councilmember Patterson allocates “retired” van to Skihawks Racing Team

Summary

King County non-profit organization receives vehicle to assist developmentally challenged athletes

Story

On October 4, Metropolitan King County Councilmember Julia Patterson provided an eleven-passenger van to the Skihawks Racing Team, a local non-profit organization that works with developmentally challenged athletes. The Skihawks will use the van year around, and the vehicle will be especially useful during winter months for transporting athletes to and from ski areas for alpine, nordic, and snowboarding activities.

“I am thrilled that King County can provide a vehicle to an organization as important as the Skihawks,” said Patterson. “Through sports and outdoor activities, the Skihawks inspire and involve developmentally challenged athletes throughout King County. This van will help them continue their great work.”

The Skihawks have historically relied upon transportation from partner organizations and private parties, but this van will provide more reliable transportation and allow the Skihawks more flexibility when planning events. Developmentally challenged athletes from throughout King County participate in Skihawks activities, which enhance participants lives by building self-esteem, confidence, independence, and involvement in social functions.

Since 1995, the County Council has donated vans from Metro’s Vanpool to local nonprofit organizations to provide transportation for low-income, elderly, youth, and disabled residents. The vans are part of a fleet of county vehicles that have been ‘retired’ after accruing a certain number of miles.

Governments, agencies and organizations that receive vans must meet specific requirements, including outlining specific plans for using the van, ability to provide quality and trained drivers, and assurance that the van will be available to assist persons without regard to affiliation with any particular organization.

Interested organizations can contact Councilmember Patterson for more information on applying for a vehicle.
