Cedar River Landslide

Cedar River Landslide

A view up the side channel, with one of the excavators in the background and water entering from the side.

The photo above shows the pre-existing side channel that was connected to the river above the slide. This channel had recently been widened and deepened to create habitat for salmon spawning and rearing. Luckily it was located close to the landslide and provided an alternative channel to re-route the river, drain the impounded water and prevent further mobilization of the landslide and impoundment of the river. This side channel was already connected to the river at the downstream end. Only a short connection was needed to join the river to the upstream end of the side channel.
