Eligible school groups must:

• Be a public school in King County, or a public school in Pierce or Snohomish County located within the Wastewater Treatment Division's service area
• Have a school low income percentage of at least 35%
• Be between 20-70 people
• Be attending a field trip at a participating program

Wheels to Water is usually available only once per group per school year. A teacher may request a second Wheels to Water bus for their class in the same school year if:

• The group is attending a different program; and
• The school has a low income percentage of at least 50%

• South Treatment Plant
• Brightwater Center, including IslandWood programs
• Mountains to Sound Greenway Trust

For field trips to South Plant and Brightwater:

1. In the "appointment details" section, check the "Request Wheels to Water" box. 
2. King County Wastewater Treatment Division staff will work you to confirm your field trip, and coordinate with Metro transit to arrange all details of time and pick up/drop off location(s).
3. A confirmation will be emailed to you 1-2 weeks before your trip with an attached transit report.
4. Before your trip, print 2 copies of the transit trip report

For field trips with the Mountains to Sound Greenway Trust and South King County Watershed Festival:

1. Schedule your field trip directly with the participating program.
2. After your field trip is confirmed, your scheduler will direct you to 
3. Submit your request to Wheels to Water at least 3 weeks in advance. 
4. King County Wastewater Treatment Division staff will work with Metro transit to arrange all details of time and pick up/drop off location(s).
5. A confirmation will be emailed to you 1-2 weeks before your trip with an attached transit report.
6. Before your trip, print 2 copies of the transit trip report

Wheels to Water uses standard 40-passenger or large 70-passenger coaches.

Buses are available Monday-Friday between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m.

Buses often continue providing regional transportation in the middle of the day, and will leave the field site after drop-off and return for afternoon pick-up.

When approved, your bus is free. King County WTD and Metro Transit take care of all cost logistics.

This program is funded by water and sewer rates to support regional access to education about wastewater treatment, water, and nutrient recycling and choices that are made every day at home that impact the sewer system, treatment plants, and regional water quality.
