Department of Ecology is managing the clean-up of the Tacoma Smelter Plume. The area is too large to dig up all the contaminated soils. Instead, we are using a combination of clean-up and education. Download map of affected areas.
King County communities most affected are:
- Vashon-Maury Island
- Parts of Federal Way and Kent
- Des Moines
- SeaTac
- Normandy Park
- Burien
- Tukwila
- North Highline area
- West Seattle

- Get your home soil tested. If you're in the soil safety service area, fill out the Property Access Agreement for Soil Sampling form (available in English and Spanish). If you are a renter, ask the owner to fill it out.

Ecology's Soil Safety Program tests and cleans up play areas at schools, childcares, and parks. Most of the clean-up work at these play areas have been completed. For more information, visit Ecology's Soil Safety Program's blog.
