The Clerk of the Metropolitan King County Council is the official repository for all Council proceedings and legislation.

What the Clerk of the Council office does

Our mission is to create and maintain accurate and required records for the King County Council. We facilitate more effective government and provide consistent quality responsiveness to citizens.

Our responsibilities include the following:

  • Uniform and efficient flow of legislation
  • Thorough and accurate records processing
  • Control over records location, identification, and retrieval

We also maintain adoption notices, public hearings, county initiatives, and public records requests.

Our responsibilities

  • Assist the public, staff, and county agencies with the status of legislation
  • Prepare Council meeting agendas and proceedings
  • Record all meetings of the Council, Board of Health, Forecast Council, and the Employment and Administration Committee
  • Advise the Council on rules and parliamentary procedures
  • Handle the legally-required advertisement of legislation for the Council and Hearing Examiner
  • Direct the production and distribution of the King County Code and the drafting guide for ordinances and motions
  • Review all legislation, initiatives, and referendums for proper form
  • Assist executive and Council staff in drafting legislation
  • Maintain a database of all legislation filed with the Council
  • Accept appeals of the Hearing Examiner, and petitions for incorporation
  • Accept franchise applications, road improvement districts, and no-shooting zones
  • Prepare historical records on all adopted legislation by maintaining permanent files, logs, and index catalogs
  • Track and document all lapsed or reintroduced legislation
  • Assist in the preparation of the annual property tax ordinance
  • Ensure all original files are complete and archived
  • Prepare quarterly voting reports
