Treatment process at Brightwater

Learn about the process we use to clean wastewater at Brightwater.

Brightwater is an advanced treatment facility that uses a membrane bioreactor system. By combining standard biological wastewater treatment with membrane filters, the process produces higher quality water that is 7 to 10 times cleaner than typical secondary treated wastewater.

NPDES permits

The Washington State Department of Ecology administers National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permits under authority delegated to the department by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. These permits outline the conditions under which King County can discharge treated wastewater.
