Climate change is predicted to have long-term consequences for our economy, our environment, and public health and safety. To do its part, King County International Airport-Boeing Field aims to be carbon neutral by 2030. As part of this effort, the airport is pursuing accreditation through the Airport Carbon Accreditation Program (ACAP) as one of many actions to prepare for climate change and support King County's Strategic Climate Action Plan. Our airport is the first general aviation airport in Washington to join the global effort. ACAP is the only airport-specific, internationally recognized carbon management standard.

KCIA has completed Level 1 of the Airport Carbon Accreditation Program, the first general aviation airport in Washington to complete this task. Staff compiled all emission sources that are airport-owned, such as natural gas, electricity from buildings, and emissions from fleet vehicles and fire training exercises.  The Greenhouse Gas emission (GHG) calculations showed a 25% decrease in carbon emission from 2007-2019.

The airport is pursuing the next level of accreditation, demonstrating reduced emissions through the implementation of effective carbon management procedures. Some of the ideas we're considering to reduce greenhouse gases include electrifying our ground vehicle fleet, purchasing sustainably-produced electricity, and improving energy efficiency through capital projects.

KCIA Work Plan for Certification in the Airport Carbon Accreditation Program 

The Strategic Climate Action Plan includes quantifiable county-wide goals to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Participation in ACAP supports these goals by identifying greenhouse gas emissions specific to King County International Airport and developing a plan to manage and reduce these emissions.
