The mission of the CIU is to investigate suspected criminal activity related to the Metro Transit system. Detectives forward conclusions based on probable cause to the appropriate prosecutor for recommended criminal charges. Detectives provide guidance, assistance, and expertise to other precinct units or law enforcement agencies regarding Metro Transit criminal investigations.

Reducing the number of assaults involving Metro Transit operators is a top priority for Metro Transit Police (MTP).

Types of investigations

CIU Detectives handle investigations related to:

  • Court order violations
  • Felony property crimes
  • Forgeries
  • Larcenies
  • Malicious harassment
  • Operator assaults
  • Other felony assaults not involving Metro employees
  • Robberies
  • Sex crimes
  • Stabbings
  • Threats/harassment
  • Unlawful transit conduct/fare evasion
  • Vehicle thefts and car prowls
  • Violation of the Uniform Controlled Substance Act (VUCSA)
  • Violation of the Uniform Firearm Act (VUFA)
  • and any other felony crimes that are committed in relation to Metro Transit facilities, properties, and/or coaches.

These investigations stem both from arrests made by MTP deputies and cases where a suspect is unknown and needs to be identified through further investigation.

In addition to normal caseloads, detectives assigned to the Criminal Investigations Unit also play an important role in documenting and responding to other incidents that arise. These special investigations include, but are not limited to investigations resulting from Special Details and operator assault investigations.

Reducing the number of assaults involving Metro Transit operators is a top priority for Metro Transit Police (MTP). The ultimate responsibility of monitoring operator assaults will reside with the MTP Criminal Investigations Unit (CIU). One detective is assigned to monitor all operator assaults. Other Metro CIU duties include suspension panel responsibilities. The assigned Detective is responsible for internal review of all issued suspensions for accuracy and completion.

The MTP CIU also coordinates with local schools, with one assigned School Liaison Detective, to make certain that those students utilizing Metro for school transportation do so safely and appropriately.
