Story

King County Elections (KCE) certified the 2021 November General election on Tuesday, November 23. Over 616,000 voters returned their ballots, marking a countywide turnout of 44%. This turnout is in line with previous odd year elections with 2019’s turnout hitting 49% and 2017’s turnout of 43%.

42.4% of ballots were returned via mail and 57.3% were returned to one of KCE’s 74 secure drop box locations around the county. 0.3% were returned by overseas and services voters by email or fax.

Final results are available on the King County Elections website, as are precinct-level results, election summaries, and reconciliation reports.

The results were certified during Tuesday’s Canvassing Board meeting. Board members Julie Wise, Kevin Wright, and Janine Weihe presided over the election’s certification. The meeting can be viewed on YouTube or Facebook.

Three races are headed to a mandatory machine recount:

  • City of Newcastle, Council Position 6
  • Issaquah School District No. 411, Director District No. 4
  • Public Hospital District No. 1, Commissioner District No. 2

Washington state law requires a machine recount when there is a difference of less than 2,000 votes AND also less than 0.50% of the total number of votes for both candidates. Recount activities for those races will begin on November 30 at 10 a.m. The recount will be certified by the King County Canvassing Board on December 6 at 11:30 a.m. The certification meeting will be livestreamed on King County Elections’ Facebook page.
