Selecting a medical plan
Most employees have three medical plan options: Kaiser Permanente's SmartCare Connect, Regence BlueShield's KingCare Select, and Regence BlueShield's KingCare PPO.
Check out all three options and make an informed decision on which plan is best suited for you and your family.
To compare the performance and quality of medical plans and clinics, view the Washington Health Alliance Quality Composite Scores and the National Committee for Quality Assurance scores: NCQA Report Card for Kaiser and NCQA Report Card for Regence .

Things to keep in mind:
- If you have coverage through another employer’s medical plan, you may opt out of medical coverage and receive an additional $65 in monthly pay, taxed as ordinary income.
- When you cover a spouse or state-registered domestic partner on your King County employee medical plan, you will pay a monthly Spouse Benefit Access Fee for their coverage. The Spouse Benefit Access Fee automatically applies each year you cover your spouse or partner on your medical plan. If you qualify for an exemption to the Spouse Benefit Access Fee, you must declare the exemption on the Benefits Enrollment Form when first eligible for benefits and again each year during Open Enrollment. There are no Spouse Benefit Access Fees for covering children on your medical plan and Spouse Benefit Access Fees do not apply to dental and vision coverage.
- If you and your spouse/state-registered domestic partner are both county employees, you may not cover each other as dependents, however you may each cover eligible children up to age 26.
- To help you better understand your medical benefits, see the Glossary of Health Coverage and Medical Terms.
