PUBLIC NOTICE: BREACH OF CONFIDENTIALITY
On June 9, 2022, a nurse in Public Health – Seattle & King County's Children with Special Health Care Needs program was doing field work when her car was stolen. There were medical documents in the car. The Public Health Compliance Office received the incident report on June 10, 2022.
At this point in our on-going investigation, we are not aware of any misuse of these stolen documents. Here is what we know so far:
- The stolen materials consisted of paper medical documents that were hospital referrals given to the Children with Special Health Care Needs nurse. The purpose of these referrals is to connect families to Public Health services.
- The paper documents contained at least these identifiers: 1) infant and parent names; 2) home addresses; 3) phone numbers; and 4) insurance information.
- We believe there were about 10 clients affected but we are still investigating.
- We do not know if the medical documents were returned.
- The exact names of the clients are not known, nor do we have any other contact information at this time.
Public Health – Seattle & King County takes client privacy very seriously. As such, we maintain policies and procedures for the protection of client information. We are still investigating this matter and are taking appropriate steps to make sure this does not recur.
